I get many questions about styes appear in my inbox and one of the most common questions I’m asked is ‘how can I pop a stye?’.
If you’ve read my blog posts, you’ll know that I always say never ever squeeze a stye! This can result in a spread of the infection and cause damage to your eyelid. In addition it is very very painful – trust me, I’ve tried it!
However, there is a way to pop a stye without squeezing it – actually there are two ways:
The first method is to ask your doctor to lance it with a needle. Your doctor will give you a local anesthetic for this so you won’t feel a thing. The bad news is that many doctor will only surgically remove a stye if you’ve had it for a long time or it is particularly large.
The second method is apply a hot compress to your eye regularly throughout the day. This heat and moisture will ‘pop’ the stye, releasing the fluids and removing the bacteria. This is the ONLY method you should consider when popping a stye yourself.
