How To Get Rid of a Chalazion: Chalazion Treatment

In this article, I will discuss what a chalazion is and how you can get rid of them. If you’re unsure whether you have a stye or chalazion, check out my Stye or Chalazion article.

For information about getting rid of styes, click here.

A chalazion is a bump or lump on the eyelid. They are often confused with styes, however unlike styes, chalazions are not painful and can last for months or even years.

They are caused by a blocked meibomian gland (these are glands on the eyelid that produce an oily substance that prevents the eye’s tear film evaporating and leaking) and usually occur on the upper eyelid.

The main symptom of a chalazion is the signature bump or lump on the eyelid. Although they’re usually painless, they can result in a swelling of the eyelid, tenderness and sensitivity to light as well as increased streaming of tears from the eyes.

HOW TO GET RID OF A CHALAZION
Your immune system has the capability to heal a chalazion on its own without treatment however this is a slow process and can take years for a full recovery.

Because of the long healing time, your doctor will be able to offer you chalazion treatments that will significantly speed up recovery.

Initially, antibiotics may be offered to kill the bacteria causing the infection. This usually comes in the form of eye drops, which can heal a chalazion within a couple of months.

If chalazion treatment using antibiotics is unsuccessful, your doctor may refer you to a ophthalmologist (eye doctor) who can offer surgery to get rid of the chalazion. This is usually performed whilst you are conscious under a local anesthetic (administered via a small needle into the eyelid). Then a tiny incision is made in the eyelid and the chalazion is removed.

Recovery is often quick and there is little discomfort.

A chalazion can occasionally be treated using a warm compress, however it is recommended you speak to your doctor first.

Most likely, it’s just a stye and will heal over the next day or two. If the lump doesn’t disappear within a week or two you may have a chalazion and you should visit your doctor.

Thank you for answering my question. I have another one though: Do you think I should keep treating the stye with a flannel in hot water or just leave it alone until it heals?

I would continue with the hot compress to hopefully speed up the healing process.

I’ve had a stye for a week now at first it wasn’t swollen just just hurt, after haveing it 2 days it started to get swollen and larger. I can see it on the inside of my eye lid also I’ve been applying warm compresses on it for 4 days and it doesn’t look any better should I give it more time before I see a eye doctor?

Give it 2 or 3 more days then get it checked out by your doc if there’s no improvement :)

Hi thanks for the helpful information. I have had a chalazion before and had to have surgery on my right eye to get it removed from my lower lid. I initially though it was a stye. Now the same right eye lower lid is swollen and I don’t know if it is a chalazion or a stye. What should I do?

Usually a chalazion is painless, so if it doesn’t hurt it is probably a chalazion.

Also, a chalazion will usually last longer than a stye (months or years for chalazions but only days or weeks for styes).

I would leave it a few days and perhaps apply a hot compress a few times a day. If there’s no improvement after around a week, get it checked out by your doc:)

hi, i have had a chalazion on my lower right eyelid for about 4 months. I’ve been to my eye docter and she gave me some liquid medicine that i am supposed to rub across the “lump” after doing this for the past few months i am seeing no improvment and surgery or getting steroids injected into it arent an option. Do you think any home remedies are possible to clear this chalazion up like rubbing gold on it or apply castor oil to it? these are just a few ive heard about by visiting other websites. Oh and hot compresses do NOT do anything for it, it just remains the normal size and it doesnt hurt. thanks!

I have had what i think is a chalazion for about a month now, I went to the docters a couple of weeks ago and he told me that if i bathe it with a hot flannel twice a day it would go in a couple of days, this didn’t work, I am still bathing it with a hot flannel twice a day but it doesn’t seem to be getting better, but it’s not getting worse, any adive on how to heal it?

The best bet is to go back to your doctor who will be able to prescribe antibiotics or offer surgery to get rid of it.

It could be either a chalazion or a particularly stubborn stye and your doctor was right to recommend the hot compress initially, however as it still hasn’t cleared up go back to your doc for further treatment.

ive have 2 styes on bothmy lower eyelids now for almost 2 years they both have been surgically removed but grew back in less than a month. now i have another one on my top eyelid on my left eye. plzz help i dont know what to do anymore

It’s very rare for chalazions or styes to grow back if they have been surgically removed.

You could try homeopathic remedies such as rubbing gold on the styes or using tea tree oil – although some people have reported success with these methods, there is no scientific evidence to support them.

Apart from that, I can only suggest going back to your doctor for further advice and perhaps asking to be referred to a new ophthalmologist. It could be that an underlying medical condition is weakening your immune system so that your body can’t fight the bacteria as effectively as it should – you doctor will be able to provide the best advice in this matter as he has details of your medical history and will be able to perform medical tests that could provide answers.

In addition, Erika has offered this remedy: “When i begin to see a stye growing i brag the tip of a long onion, wash it, squeeze it to get the juice out, get a lighter and put it in the heat a little to warm it up. then put it in my stye and the next day.. no stye. it sounds crazy but it always works”

    Hello.
I have had a chalazion for about two months. Finally I talked to my eye doctor and he gave me ointment for two weeks. The ointment didn’t work. So he told me that the chalzion would eventually go away by itself, but that might take months even years. So he told me surgery would be my next option. I don’t know about any of you but I did not like the big bump under my eye… so I chose surgery. I just had the surgery today. It’s only about 5 minutes. The results are great. Your eye will be swollen or red, but it will go away in a week.

I’m freaking out because I have a chalazion right now! I’m going to an ophthalmologist sometime soon being referred by my doctor. I don’t want to get surgery, quite frankly I’m too much of a chicken for that. Besides the hot compress, is there anything else you would suggest?

I have a small bump on my upper eyelid. It doesn’t hurt or itch or is even really a different color from my skin. Often times I don’t even know it’s there. It’s been there for about a month or maybe more. I’ve still been wearing eyeliner but no mascara and I haven’t seen a doctor but would really like to get it removed without ANY type of surgery. Please help! I hate it!
