In this article, I will discuss what a chalazion is and how you can get rid of them. If you’re unsure whether you have a stye or chalazion, check out my Stye or Chalazion article.

A chalazion is a bump or lump on the eyelid. They are often confused with styes, however unlike styes, chalazions are not painful and can last for months or even years.
They are caused by a blocked meibomian gland (these are glands on the eyelid that produce an oily substance that prevents the eye’s tear film evaporating and leaking) and usually occur on the upper eyelid.
The main symptom of a chalazion is the signature bump or lump on the eyelid. Although they’re usually painless, they can result in a swelling of the eyelid, tenderness and sensitivity to light as well as increased streaming of tears from the eyes.
HOW TO GET RID OF A CHALAZION
Your immune system has the capability to heal a chalazion on its own without treatment however this is a slow process and can take years for a full recovery.
Because of the long healing time, your doctor will be able to offer you chalazion treatments that will significantly speed up recovery.
Initially, antibiotics may be offered to kill the bacteria causing the infection. This usually comes in the form of eye drops, which can heal a chalazion within a couple of months.
If chalazion treatment using antibiotics is unsuccessful, your doctor may refer you to a ophthalmologist (eye doctor) who can offer surgery to get rid of the chalazion. This is usually performed whilst you are conscious under a local anesthetic (administered via a small needle into the eyelid). Then a tiny incision is made in the eyelid and the chalazion is removed.
Recovery is often quick and there is little discomfort.
A chalazion can occasionally be treated using a warm compress, however it is recommended you speak to your doctor first.
